The Premise
Every startup founder writes a framework book. "Here are the principles. Here is how to think."
Almost nobody writes the honest version: what actually happened, night by night, tweet by tweet, Apple rejection by Apple rejection. The shame of not being able to explain what you're building. The year when fixing one thing broke two others. The night a stranger's tweet changed everything.
This is the honest version.
Part 1 — The Long Before (2018–2022)
Chapter 1: What the French
May 23, 2018. Montreal, Canada. YouTube channel created.
SCENE: A French teacher creates a YouTube channel called "What the French." The name came from wordplay, humour, and emotional resonance. He doesn't know it yet, but the problem this channel is trying to solve — making language learning feel alive and human — will define the next eight years.
SOURCE: YouTube channel creation date, verified. Location: Montreal.
KEY QUOTE: The problem Voicely solves existed here, 8 years before the product did.
Chapter 2: The Creator Years
2018–2021. YouTube, TikTok, Instagram, LearnWorlds.
SCENE: The entertainer-teacher identity takes shape. TikTok reaches ~60K followers. Instagram ~25K (before a hack). LearnWorlds generates ~$5,000 in first course revenue — the first educational infrastructure moment.
SOURCE: ChatGPT memory, multiple 2024 sessions. TikTok 65K confirmed Nov 2023 session.
KEY INSIGHT: The difference between making content and building systems — the conceptual seed of Voicely's training architecture.
Chapter 3: The COVID Skill Stack
2020–2022. Return to France. Building everything.
SCENE: Web design, email marketing, Shopify, video production, course architecture — skills accumulated across an era that looked like fragmentation and was actually polymathic formation. The COVID period produced the operational skills that made one person able to build a company requiring a team.
KEY QUOTE: "Each passion seemed disconnected from the others, like I was trying to live multiple lives at once." — Legacy Journal Outline, Dec 12, 2024.
Part 2 — The Ignition (December 18, 2022)
Chapter 4: 22:26
December 18, 2022. 10:26 PM. A tweet. 3.5 million views.
SCENE: Mark Cuban tweets: "My 13 year old just asked ChatGPT to write a trash talk about his buddy's favorite NFL team and texted it to him. Things have changed forever."
Mervine reads it. Tries ChatGPT. ChatGPT launched 18 days earlier — November 30, 2022. Mervine is an early adopter by 18 days.
SOURCE: Screenshot verified. Timestamp: 18/12/2022, 22:26. Views: 3.5M.
FIRST ChatGPT SESSION: December 20, 2022 (2 days later) — "Ebook For Kids", "Questions for Gary Vaynerchuk."
This is the ignition. Not the invention. Not the product. The moment a dormant language-teaching ambition collided with a technology that made it possible.
Part 3 — The Philosophy (2023–2024)
Chapter 5: Turning 40
2023–2024. Six months of introspection.
SCENE: Deep introspection around turning 40. The question: what is the unified whole that all these skills serve?
Holimathy emerges: HOLIstic polyMATHY. First formally documented December 4, 2023 (ChatGPT: "Holimathy Insights Unveiled").
SOURCE: ChatGPT session Dec 4, 2023.
KEY QUOTE (ChatGPT, Dec 4, 2023): "Holimathy addresses the one-word problem of fragmentation. It aims to harmonize and integrate diverse aspects of life and knowledge."
Chapter 6: Philosophy Becomes Architecture
January 2024. "Holimathy Unleashed" being written.
SCENE: The book is in progress. January 12, 2024. Six-book series envisioned, spines forming a continuous infinity symbol in crimson red when aligned on a shelf. The philosophy is being codified.
SOURCE: ChatGPT session Jan 12, 2024: "[BOOK] Holimathy Unleashed."
KEY INSIGHT: Once Holimathy existed as a framework, every project became a potential expression of it — including a future language learning app.
Part 4 — The Invention (Spring–June 2025)
Chapter 7: French Fluency — One Step Before
April 2025. LearnWorlds. 300 videos. AI personalization.
SCENE: "French Fluency" is being built on LearnWorlds. Students take a 20-question assessment quiz. An AI archetype system attaches a "main quest" and "side quests." 300+ videos form a bank from which the AI builds a customized course. No pre-made courses.
SOURCE: ChatGPT session April 23, 2025: "French Fluency Growth Strategy."
KEY QUOTE (ChatGPT): "This changes everything, Mervine. What you're building isn't just a course — it's an AI-personalized French learning ecosystem. This is potentially category-defining."
What was missing: voice cloning, the inversion, HEXI, FP rings.
Chapter 8: The Identity You Chose Not to Be
Spring 2025. Amélie AI. Mervin AI.
SCENE: Before "Voicely," the AI companion had working names: Mervin, Mervin AI, French Fluency AI, Amélie AI. Amélie was a cozy familiar feminine persona — more universal, less personal. The Bolt prompt from May 30, 2025 still refers to the app as "Mervin."
SOURCE: ChatGPT session May 30, 2025 (Bolt prompt). Memory export April 30, 2026.
DECISION: Both rejected. Voicely won because it pointed outward — to the learner's voice, not the creator's.
Chapter 9: The Inversion
June 3–4, 2025. The founding insight.
SCENE: The mental model changes. Not: "students learn from Mervine's cloned voice." But: "students hear themselves fluent."
SOURCE: ChatGPT reconstruction (May 7, 2026): "The most likely invention date: around June 3–4, 2025. That appears to be the period where the mental model fundamentally changed from 'AI teacher' to 'the learner hears their own future fluent self.' That is the real invention. Not the app."
SCIENCE VALIDATION (discovered weeks later): fNIRS 2025 study, Nature/Scientific Reports, DOI 10.1038/s41598-025-92702-5. AI-synthesized familiar voices activate prefrontal + temporal cortex simultaneously. The product intuition preceded the scientific evidence.
VOICECAST closing line (written later): "You can stop the search. Your fluent [language] self just introduced itself."
Chapter 10: June 10, 2025 — Voicely
The name. The ecosystem. The founding date.
SCENE: "Voicely" stabilizes. The ecosystem vision forms: not one app, but an architecture. Voicely Language, Voicely Mind, Voicely Speak, Voicely Speech, Voicely Calm. The HoliFit / "Holi-" prefix explored in April 2025 becomes the "Voicely" prefix.
SOURCE: ChatGPT session May 30, 2025 (first appearance). June 10, 2025 (stabilization, per May 7, 2026 reconstruction).
Part 5 — The Build (Late 2025–April 2026)
Chapter 11: "Ashamed He Couldn't Explain What He Was Building"
December 2025. The precursor phase.
SCENE: The product exists. It's real. But every attempt to explain it fails. "It's like Duolingo but actually measures skill." "It's voice cloning, but not a teacher clone." "It's like fitness for language." None land. The concept requires experiencing it.
SOURCE: ChatGPT session Dec 7, 2025: "Language learning app revenue."
KEY QUOTE (ChatGPT): "That sentence captures an experience that almost never gets named, yet it defines the precursor phase: 'Ashamed that he couldn't explain what he was building.'""
Chapter 12: The Invention Phase
Mid/Late 2025. Base44. Word Bubbles. The Island.
SCENE: Core innovations built on Base44. Word Bubbles from Vocable magazine. The Island from Apple's Dynamic Island. Cultural Immersion Mode, Exam Prep, Citizenship Mode. Rich features. Fragile foundation.
August 12, 2025 (ChatGPT: "Voicely feature breakdown"): "That feeling of 'fix one, break two' is incredibly common and signals that you're pushing the boundaries."
Chapter 13: Debug Hell
April 27, 2026. Claude Code. 17 stages.
SCENE: The first Claude Code session opens. The message: "After 3 weeks of debug hell, an audit identified 8 critical bugs with build-pipeline causes." What follows: 17 numbered stages over 5 days. Apple rejection (3 violations). RevenueCat decision. Sign in with Apple — 4 strategies, abandoned. The isMounted pattern.
The splash screen loop that survived stages 5, 7, and 13 before a 5-part simultaneous fix.
Part 6 — The System (May 2026)
Chapter 14: The Trail
May 2026. The documentation IS the product.
SCENE: 53 journal entries. Two academic white papers. Three book structures. A 9-panel operations dashboard. 29 AI QA agents. FP Rings calibrated to CEFR research. "The FHQ shows 1 subscriber and 0 pageviews. That's the honest current state. The infrastructure is extraordinary. The distribution hasn't started yet."
The trail-leaving is not self-promotion. It is the proof of concept for a new kind of founder — one who builds with AI, thinks in systems, documents in real time, and leaves behind not just a product but a complete record of how it was made.
"Not bragging — trail-leaving."
